In reality, both of these approaches are widely used. Surveys show that 34% of Fortune 1000 executives believe that when looking for a CDO, it is better to turn to an outside expert who can provide an independent assessment of the state of affairs in the organization. On the other hand, 32% of respondents say that a good CDO can only be an employee with a long history of working for the company and sharing its values. At the same time, there is no consensus on the required professional skills of a CDO: 23% say that a digital data specialist or analyst is suitable for this position, and 11% are inclined to favor an official who oversees financial operations.
If we talk about the CDO's salary, its amount is much higher than that of representatives of other IT professions. Thus, the annual income of a data director in the USA in 2019 ranged from 116 to 254 thousand dollars, which is equivalent to 580-1,270 thousand rubles per month. In addition, the CDO, as a top manager, also receives annual bonuses for high-quality work.
As a rule, the salary of a data director directly depends on the length of his work in specialized positions: the highest compensation awaits a CDO with more than 20 years of experience.
In Russia, the picture is dentist database different: by 2022, there remains a mismatch between supply and demand. It is possible to acquire sufficient competencies for CDO only in a small group of developed companies. At the same time, there is a need for such experts in many areas of activity.
Taking into account the active implementation of digital technologies in organizations of various forms of ownership, the growing popularity of using data for business management, more and more domestic and foreign companies will open these vacancies. Accordingly, in our country, CDOs receive no less than 500 thousand rubles. Similarly, the demand for directors of digital transformation and artificial intelligence will increase.

Differences between the two CDOs – Chief Data Officer and Chief Digital Officer
Each CDO has their own position on many issues, as well as previous experience. As a rule, the Chief Digital Officer began his career in marketing or IT, and the Chief Data Officer - in the field of analytics and data work.
It is logical to assume that the data director's priority task will be to ensure the safety and security of information and the efficient work with it. And the head of digital technologies will consider issues of digital transformation as a whole.
